NUCLEAR AND RADIATION SAFETY CENTER

The Thermal Hydraulic Analysis and Multiphysics Simulation Group (THG)

THG at NRSC has vast experience in performing thermal hydraulic analyses using advanced and comprehensive computational tools and meeting the requirements of nuclear industry. The specific analytical tools used by NRSC to model and analyze thermal hydraulic processes include but are not limited to:

  • RELAP5 and TRACE for the analyzing integral system behavior for the entire spectrum of transients and accidents in a nuclear reactor;
  • MELCOR for the analysis of beyond design-basis accidents and severe accidents that cause core melt, and for the transport of radionuclides in the reactor coolant system and reactor site;
  • COCOSYS for simulation of processes in hermetically closed plant areas (containment).

We are also experienced in analyzing the radiological consequences during incidents and severe accidents. The main tools used for radiological consequence analysis are RADTRAD and RASCAL codes.

NRSC has expanded its analytical capabilities by using advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes ANSYS CFX and FLUENT, which allow modeling and analysis of the 3D aspects of the flow.
